Charged with “airing false news “ as well as belonging to a “terrorist organization … and harming national unity and social peace,” 20 Al-Jazeera journalists are scheduled for trial by Egyptian prosecutors on Wednesday. 16 of the journalists are Egyptian, while four are foreigners (two British, one Australian, and one Dutch). Only eight of them are currently held, while the government searches for the rest. The charge that the journalists have links with the banned Muslim Brotherhood, may stem from the authorities anger over Al-Jazeera’s critical coverage of the government’s crackdown on the Brotherhood.
