Elon Musk helped to free imprisoned Italian journalist Cecilia Sala from Iran after the 29-year-old’s boyfriend reached out to him to intervene, according to a report. When Sala’s boyfriend, Daniele Raineri, heard Iran-Italy prisoner swap negotiations were underway and being mediated by the U.S., he reached out to Musk through one of his associates, according to The New York Times. Through Musk’s connection with Iran’s U.N. ambassador, the Tesla CEO helped secure Sala’s release last week in exchange for Mohammad Abedini Najafabadi, whom the U.S. accused of acquiring drone technology used to attack a U.S. base in Jordan. The Biden administration said it was unaware of the deal and disapproved of it. The agreement marks the most recent political episode Musk has involved himself in. Critics of Musk’s pattern of prying into political affairs have accused him of trying to serve his business interests. Italy is currently considering a deal with Musk’s company, SpaceX.
