Billionaire Tesla CEO Elon Musk spoke with Pennsylvania Gov. Josh Shapiro in a surprise phone call about investing in the Keystone State, sources told NBC News on Tuesday. Musk was sitting with fellow billionaire and part-owner of the Pittsburgh Steelers, Thomas Tull, in box seats at Acrisure Stadium on Sunday, where he reportedly put the governor on the phone with Musk about bringing factories to the region. Musk has emerged as one of the loudest supporters of Republican nominee former President Donald Trump, endorsing him after the assassination attempt against him in Butler, Pennsylvania in July. He spoke on stage with the president at a return rally to Butler on Saturday, in a fawning speech where he declared himself “Dark MAGA.” Musk is also preparing to stump for the Republican nominee in the Keystone State in the weeks preceding the election, Politico reported. Shapiro, a Democrat, was reportedly on the short list to be Kamala Harris’ vice presidential nominee before she selected Minnesota Gov. Tim Walz. Though unlikely allies, NBC reports Musk was intrigued by Tull’s “economic development efforts in Pennsylvania.”
