The estimated number of transgender adults in the United States has jumped to 1.4 million, new federal and state data show. The new figure—though double the amount previously believed—still makes up only 0.6 percent of the nation’s adult population. Younger adults were more likely than older ones to identify as transgender, researchers said, in particular, those between the ages of 18 and 24. Mara Keisling, executive director for the National Center for Transgender Equality, predicted those numbers will continue to rise as social awareness grows and more legal changes are implemented.
