The U.K. has increased its travel warning for those entering the United States amid the Trump administrationâs immigration crackdown, Reuters reported Thursday.
The website for the countryâs foreign office currently states, âYou should comply with all entry, visa and other conditions of entry. The authorities in the U.S. set and enforce entry rules strictly. You may be liable to arrest or detention if you break the rules.â
In early February, according to the outlet, guidance was more brief, and did not mention anything about arrest or detention: âThe authorities in the U.S. set and enforce entry rules.â
Earlier this month, U.K. tourist Becky Burke was being detained for more than 10 days by Immigration and Customs Enforcement over a reported âvisa mix-up.â
Her parents, Paul and Andrea Burke, told the BBC that she was taken in âleg chains, waist chains and handcuffs,â which left her âtraumatized.â Paul Burke added: âShe is not Hannibal Lecter.â
She has since been able to return home.
Several German tourists have also been detained for extended periods of time, with one travelerâs offense reportedly being traveling with tattoo equipment.
That country responded by updating its own travel advisory to stress that a visa or entry waiver does not necessarily mean they will be allowed into the U.S.
