Evelyn Lauder, the daughter-in-law of cosmetics pioneer Estée Lauder, died Saturday from monogenetic ovarian cancer. She was 75. After she was born in Vienna in 1936, her family fled Hitler’s tyranny and eventually landed in New York in 1940, where the family opened a chain of dress shops. She met Leonard Lauder, Estée’s son, on a blind date—and famously said her mother-in-law began rearranging the furniture after the second date. After being diagnosed with breast cancer in 1989, Lauder created the pink-ribbon campaign, which has become the worldwide symbol of breast-cancer research, and in 1993 she founded the Breast Cancer Research Foundation, which has raised more than $350 million.
