The former Department of Veterans Affairs secretary, David Shulkin, said early Monday that he was fired via a tweet from President Trump. Trump announced Shulkin’s dismissal on Twitter at the end of March, saying: “I am thankful for Dr David Shulkin’s service to our country and to our GREAT VETERANS!” Although White House officials initially claimed that Shulkin had resigned from his position, he later insisted that he was fired by the president and had no intention of stepping down. Speaking on CNN, Shulkin said: “Gen. [John] Kelly gave me a heads up that the president would most likely be tweeting out a message in the very near future and I appreciated having that heads up from Gen. Kelly.” Asked by host Alisyn Camerota if he was essentially fired via the tweet from the president, Shulkin responded: “Yes.”
