It’s been three years since Marina Diamandis and her band, AKA Marina and the Diamonds, released their last album, the critically acclaimed and impossible not to dance to Electra Heart. The funky, new wave-y pop album brought the already popular Welsh sensation a swarm of American fans—fans who are now clamoring for more.
And they’re gonna get it.
Sticking to her brightly colored cartoonish persona, the forthcoming Froot, out March 16 shows clear lineage to her stated inspirations of Gwen Stefani and Britney Spears, while still bearing Marina’s own signature. Maybe it’s the fact that she’s been diagnosed with synesthesia, a rare condition that causes her to associate colors with musical notes, but once again she’s managed to capture a rainbow of expression in her music.
After tours opening for the likes of kindred spirit Katy Perry, Marina and the Diamonds are poised to take center stage themselves, proving to be a pop force to be reckoned with. Catch them this summer at Coachella, Governor’s Ball, and, if you’re in Austin next week, SXSW.
