Exiled Yemeni President Appoints VP

Embatted Yemeni President Abdu Rabbu Mansour Hadi appointed his former prime minister as his vice president on Sunday, a decision aimed at quelling clashes with the Shiite rebels known as Houthis and to find a political solution and end the nation’s civil war. Hadi, who was forced to flee to Saudi Arabia earlier this year, tapped Khaled Bahah to become vice president, but Houthi spokesman Mohammed Abdel Salam denounced the appointment on a pro-Houthi television station. The Houthi rebels, who have seized control of the capital Sanaa and much of the nation’s northern region, have demanded the formation of a presidential council instead.
