An explosive device has been found in the mailbox of billionaire philanthropist George Soros, a favorite target of right-wing conspiracy theorists and, most recently, President Trump. Bomb squad technicians “proactively detonated” the device after it was discovered near the home in northern Westchester on Monday afternoon, according to the Bedford Police Department. “An employee of the residence opened the package, revealing what appeared to be an explosive device. The employee placed the package in a wooded area and called the Bedford police,” police said in a statement. Soros was not home at the time. Soros, 88, a Hungarian-born political activist who often donates to Democrats, is frequently vilified in alt-right conspiracy theories, having most recently been accused of funding a caravan of Honduran migrants heading for the U.S. border. Trump also suggested earlier this month that demonstrators protesting against then-Supreme Court nominee Brett Kavanaugh had been paid by Soros.
