While prosecutors in the Justice Department have not made a final decision about whether to file charges, the FBI said Monday that IRS officials did not commit a crime by inspecting the tax-exempt status of conservative groups. When the IRS originally disclosed that its officials had searched applications for groups with the words “Tea Party” and “Patriots” in their names, an uproar ensued and members of Congress pressed the Justice Department to investigate. However, it turns out that the agency also applied the same scrutiny to liberal groups' applications by searching for “Progressive” and “Occupy.”
