The Food and Drug Administration made history on Thursday by approving genetically modified salmon for sale across the country. The AquAdvantage Atlantic Salmon, or "frankenfish" as critics call it, became the first altered animal cleared for food consumption in the U.S. The fish grows twice as fast as normal salmon, containing an added growth hormone from Chinook salmon that enables it to produce growth hormone all year. The agency said there was no material differences between genetically modified and normal salmon, which means labels are not required to note the difference. However, retailers like Whole Foods, Trader Joe's, Target and Kroger have said they will refuse to sell AquAdvantage Salmon.
