The Food and Drug Administration has ordered genetic test maker 23andMe to halt marketing and sales of its personalized DNA test kits. The FDA says the Google-backed company has not demonstrated that the tests are safe or supported by science even after "more than 14 face-to-face and teleconference meetings" and "hundreds of e-mail exchanges." The saliva-based kit, which has been on the market for five years, claims it can not only tell customers their ancestry, but that it can tell customers whether they are at risk for certain diseases and health conditions.
