A federal judge in California on Tuesday temporarily barred the Trump administration from ending an Obama-era program that protects young immigrants from deportation. U.S. District Judge William Alsup sided with critics of President Trump’s move to kill the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals program, ruling that the decision to end it was improper. Alsup said the program must remain in place while several legal challenges against it play out in court, and renewal applications for those already enrolled must continue to be accepted. The program has shielded from deportation about 800,000 people who were brought to the country illegally as children. Attorney General Jeff Sessions announced the decision to kill the program last September, saying it was the “compassionate thing to do.”
