Roughly 1,000 migrant children are being held inside a compound in Homestead, near Miami, according to Rep. Debbie Wasserman Schultz. Local media has reported that it’s as yet unclear whether the Homestead Temporary Shelter for Unaccompanied Children is housing children who entered the country without their parents, or is housing them after authorities separated them from their parents when their families entered the country. A spokesman for the Department of Health and Human Services refused to clarify which type of migrant child the facility was holding, simply saying to The Miami Herald: “Homestead is an active temporary unaccompanied alien children program facility.” The facility was closed last year but reopened earlier this year without public notice.
