A ferry carrying almost 700 passengers sunk in the Philippines after hitting a cargo vessel on Friday evening. At least 31 people have died, and 500 were rescued by coast-guard patrols, naval vessels, and fishing boats. Many are still reported missing. According to passengers, hundreds began jumping into the water as the ferry sunk about 1.2 miles from the shore—though many had been asleep or struggled to find their way in the dark. The boat was submerged 30 minutes after the crash, and rescue crews are still working to find the missing passengers.
