Thousands have been driven from their homes on Spain’s Canary Islands as firefighters continued to battle back the blaze Sunday. About 1,000 people were evacuated overnight from the popular vacation destination, and officials said the fire had done serious damage to a reserve of “incalculable ecological value.” The fire comes after one of the country’s harshest dry spells in nearly seven decades and flared up Friday even as firefighters said they were using helicopters and planes to quench the flames. Close to 5,000 people are said to have been evacuated from their homes as the fire spread.
