Four Americans and one local guide were killed Saturday in Costa Rica when a bachelor party rafting trip went tragically awry, according to a Sunday report from NBC News. The 14 friends, all Florida men between the ages of 25 and 35, were only in the water for five minutes before all three of the rafts capsized, tossing everyone on-board into the Naranjo River. “Everyone struggled to get back on the rafts, with some efforts being successful, but ultimately the rafts continued to capsize due to the immense current,” the surviving men wrote in a GoFundMe page for the victims. “Within minutes, all of us were careening down the river with life jackets and helmets just trying to stabilize and find something to hold on to.” The American embassy has since helped the victims’ families travel to Costa Rica to aid in funeral proceedings. “Luis, the man we hoped to celebrate all weekend, lost a brother and we all lost four great friends during this vacation which went horribly wrong,” the survivors wrote, adding that “What was meant to be a weekend to remember for 14 friends turned into a living nightmare.”
