The Olympic Freestyle Skiing event at the 2018 Winter Games will kick off Friday, Feb. 9 at 8 p.m. ET at the Phoenix Snow Park in Pyeongchang, South Korea. The women will start the competition with the first mogul qualification round, followed by the men’s mogul qualifications at 9:45. But this event isn’t your basic race-down-the-slope competition.
So what is Freestyle Skiing exactly? It’s the combination of X Games-style moves and jumps while speeding on snow. The competition, sometimes called “freeski,” is made up of five categories of the discipline: moguls, halfpipe, ski cross, aerials, and ski slopestyle. Think skateboarding or dirt-bike riding, but with skis—a high-adrenaline competition you may not need a warm drink in hand to watch.
Former X Games gold medalist McRae Williams is part of the U.S. Freestyle Skiing team lineup. The Park City, Utah, native is also the 2017 world champion, but the entire lineup is looking strong.

Americans took home three of four Freestyle Skiing gold medals at the 2014 Sochi Olympics. Returning Team USA members include Gus Kenworthy and Nick Goepper, who were part of the U.S. podium sweep in men’s slopestyle, and Maddie Bowman and David Wise, who took gold in halfpipe.
