Following his Tuesday night victory over Vice President Kamala Harris, well-wishes for Donald Trump have come flooding in from leaders around the world.

However, it was French President Emmanuel Macron’s well-wishes for Trump that left many wondering if they were indeed an insult.

In a Tuesday post, Macron wrote: “Congratulations, President @realDonaldTrump. Ready to work together as we did for four years. With your convictions and mine. With respect and ambition. For more peace and prosperity.”

The seemingly pointed use of the word “convictions” left social media commentators wondering if Macron was being sincere or the ultimate troll, referencing Trump’s multiple criminal cases—which will reportedly close now that he returns to power.

However, a member of Macron’s comms team quickly put any speculation to rest in a note to The Huffington Post.

“The word ’convictions’ in the president’s tweet mean beliefs and cannot be associated with the meaning of convictions as condemnation/sanctions,” they said.

Meanwhile, Hungary’s Prime Minister Viktor Orbán, who has been described as a political strongman, was among other world leaders who congratulated Trump’s “comeback.”

“The biggest comeback in U.S. political history! Congratulations to President Donald Trump on his enormous win. A much needed victory for the World!” posted Orbán early on Tuesday on X. .

Israel’s Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu also reportedly gave Trump a call to congratulate him and discuss the “Iranian threat,” according to Netanyahu’s office, with The Washington Post reporting that Netanyahu also sees himself to be a “winner” in Trump’s return to power.
