It’s no secret what keeps Russian President Vladimir Putin in power. As Russian chess grandmaster Garry Kasparov puts it, “he controls directly, indirectly more money than any other individual in human history.”
Kasparov is one of the great strategists and a longtime critic of Putin, so naturally, we asked him how he thinks the current crisis in Ukraine and Vlad’s stronghold on Russia will end.

“America’s leadership being partially restored…” he explains. “I think Putin now is contemplating his next move. Recognizing that those are not just words, not lip service, not empty warnings could have serious consequences if he can, if he would continue his aggressive expansionist policies.”
There is another tactic.
“Putin recognizes that, even with all his lobbyists and agents in Europe, mostly Germany, Austria, and France, he may not be able to prevent real sanctions to hurt him and build strong defense lines against any possible aggression,” he adds.
Of course, big plays always carry risk. Asked what can be done about Ukraine, Kasparov’s answer is concise but ominous: “The only way to stop aggression is to be prepared for war.”
