George Santos Tries to Delay Sentencing to Film More Podcasts

MORE TIME MORE MONEY

At sentencing, he is expected to get at least two years prison time.

WEST ISLIP, NEW YORK - AUGUST 19: Former U.S. Rep. George Santos gives a statement after a court hearing on August 19, 2024 in West Islip, New York. Santos pleaded guilty to wire fraud and aggravated identity theft weeks before his federal trial was set to begin. His sentencing has been scheduled for February 7, and he faces more than six years in prison under federal sentencing guidelines. Santos owes at least $370,000 in restitution. George Santos is pushing to delay his sentencing in order to film more episodes of his podcast, Pants on Fire with George Santos. Just last summer, the ousted representative was ordered to pay over $578,700 to the government after pleading guilty to wire fraud and aggravated identity theft. At sentencing, he is expected to get at least two years prison time, although the judge noted that the typical range is six to eight years, according to CBS News. Santos' attorneys wrote to the judge asking for more time to film episodes to foot his bills, which requires him to pay more than $200,000 30 days before he is sentenced. His team asked to push the sentencing date from February to August. Prosecutors, however, blasted his request. “His request for delay should be denied, and sentencing should proceed as scheduled,” prosecutors said. “A delay to allow Santos to develop his podcast — the title of which is a tone-deaf and unrepentant reference to the crimes he committed — is presumptively unreasonable.” According to prosecutors, Santos has earned more than $400,000 from Cameos and $400,000 for a documentary, with an additional $174,000 for his Congress salary.
