Green Book won the Oscar for Best Picture—overcoming numerous controversies to take Hollywood’s highest honor. The movie, based on the real story of a black musician who hires a white driver for a tour of the Deep South in the 1960s, was up against a formidable field that included Roma, Black Panther, BlacKkKlansman, Bohemian Rhapsody, The Favourite, A Star Is Born, and Vice. Throughout awards season, the movie was dogged by negative headlines: about the director flashing his penis, the star using the N-word, the writer tweeting a 9/11 conspiracy theory, and complaints about its accuracy and treatment of racial inequality.
