The viral post’s author, who only identified himself as “Rick,” gave his first interview to Business Insider on Tuesday, telling the publication the joke came from “a place of irreverence if not outright disrespect.” The viral tweet has since attracted the attention of late night hosts, Fox News talking heads, and even Vice President Harris’ campaign. Rick said he has since protected his account and changed his Twitter handle to avoid unwanted attention. He also said he did not intend to spread misinformation, but instead simply wanted mock the Republican candidate. Rick also said he was inspired by a legendary story from Hunter S. Thompson’s Fear and Loathing on the Campaign Trail ‘72, in which former President Lyndon B. Johnson asked a staffer to spread a rumor his political rival was a “pig-fucker.”
