The House Ways and Means Committee formally requested that the IRS hand over six years of President Trump’s federal tax returns, The New York Times reports. Rep. Richard Neal (D-MA) reportedly handed a two-page letter to the IRS commissioner on Wednesday, demanding the president's “personal and business” tax returns from 2013 to 2018, along with returns from Trump's “trust and seven other core Trump business entities that control scores of other Trump operations”—including his Bedminster, New Jersey gold club. The committee has reportedly given the IRS until April 10 to comply with the request. “His request is about policy, not politics; my preparations were made on my own track and timeline, entirely independent of other activities in Congress and the administration,” Neal said in a statement. “I trust that in this spirit, the IRS will comply with federal law and furnish me with the requested documents in a timely manner.” The Treasury Department and IRS reportedly did not respond to the Times' requests for comment.
Separately, Rep. Elijah Cummings (D-MD) reportedly said tax and accounting firm Mazars USA was ready to turn over 10 years of President Trump’s “financial records” over to lawmakers. “They have told us that they will provide the information pretty much when they have a subpoena,” Cummings was quoted as saying by Politico. “And we’ll get them a subpoena.”
