Before turning power over to Democrats, lame duck House Republicans committee chairs are preparing to subpoena former FBI Director James Comey and former Attorney General Loretta Lynch, The Associated Press reports. Judiciary Committee Chairman Robert Goodlatte (R-VA) reportedly told colleagues he would subpoena Comey for a “closed-door deposition” on Nov. 29, and Lynch for one on Dec. 5. The Judiciary Committee and the Committee on Oversight and Government Reform have reportedly claimed that Justice Department officials were “conspiring against Trump’s election” in the past and have reportedly interviewed current and former Justice Dept. employees in their investigations Hillary Clinton’s email use and the launch of the Trump-Russia investigation. It remains to be seen if Republicans will be able to compel Lynch and Comey to testify because they lose power in January 2019. Both Goodlatte and Rep. Trey Gowdy (R-SC), chairman of the Oversight panel, are retiring then. Comey’s lawyer, David Kelley, told the AP Comey has not yet heard from the Judiciary Committee. A lawyer for Lynch reportedly did not respond to AP’s request for comment.
