Hurricane Irma Makes Landfall in Florida as Category 4 Storm

Irma has strengthened to a Category 4 hurricane as its eye reached the Florida Keys on Sunday morning, making landfall at Cudjoe Key with maximum sustained winds of 130 mph, according to the National Hurricane Center. More than 1,000,000 homes had already lost power as tropical force winds and heavy rain from the outer bands of the hurricane began to lash the Keys and Miami in the early hours of Sunday morning. Officials in Marco Island, South Florida, told CNN it was now too late to evacuate and warned remaining residents to shelter in place but to seek shelter on the second floor of a building as storm surge waters threaten widespread flooding.
