IndyCar driver Justin Wilson was placed in a medically induced coma, in critical condition, on Sunday after he was struck in the head by a piece of flying debris from a car crash during the final laps of the ABC Supply 500 at Pocono Raceway, IndyCar confirmed in a statement. Driver Sage Karam crashed his car after spinning out in Turn 1 on Lap 179 of the 200-lap race. A piece of debris from Karam’s crash appeared to hit Wilson, whose car immediately spun out into the inside wall on the exit of Turn 1. The 37-year-old suffered a severe head injury and was undergoing further evaluation at a hospital in Allentown, Pennsylvania, according to IndyCar’s statement. Wilson, a U.K. native, has competed in U.S. open-wheel racing since 2004 and earned seven wins and 27 podiums.
