What has 16,000 wind spinners, millions of plastic pony beads, thousands of ceramic birds, fruits, and animals, 13 gilded pigs, more than 10 miles of crystals, 24 chandeliers, one crocodile, and 17 cast-iron lawn jockeys? Nick Cave’s immersive, massive installation, Until. Here, Beaded Cliff Wall in Nick Cave: Until at MASS MoCA, 2016. James Prinz Photography Nick Cave—no, not that Nick Cave—has carved out his place in contemporary art since the early '90s with his wearable Soundsuits sculptures, calling for conversations about race and gender identity. While Soundsuits was created as response to the beating of Rodney King, Until tackles a wider scope of violencee—ulogizing Trayvon Martin, Eric Garner, Tamir Rice, Oscar Grant, the victims of shootings at Charleston’s Emanuel African Methodist Episcopal Church, and the Pulse nightclub in Orlando. That’s how this piece came about.” Here, Flow/Blow, 2016, Mylar, fans, scaffolding, in Nick Cave: Until at MASS MoCA James Prinz After Until finishes its run at Mass MoCA in North Adams, Massachusetts, the installation will travel to various cities to serve as a backdrop for performance artists in response to his work. The collaboration will include international musicians, dancers, poets and performers—as well as invitations to community organizers seeking a place for discussions about gun control, race and gender inequality. “I view this work as an elaborate community forum, as much as a work of sculpture,” notes Cave on his website.
