There’s not much hope, officials say. World leaders will nonetheless begin two days of meetings with the government of Iran on Monday to try to break the tension surrounding the country’s nuclear program. Representatives from Russia, China, Britain, France, Germany, and the United States will participate in the talks, which will pick up where negotiations left off at the last meeting in April. “If Iran remains unwilling to take the opportunities these talks present, it will face continuing and intensified pressure and isolation,” one Western official told Reuters. While the United States has urged further sanctions against the Islamic Republic, Russia and China want to ease off on the country. Israel has threatened to take military action if Iran seeks to build an atomic weapon.
