At rallies around Iran on Tuesday to celebrate the 35th anniversary of the Islamic Revolution, the topic of negotiations between Iran and other world powers over its nuclear program led to heated rhetoric. Many posters featured the well-known phrase “Death to America!” (hoisted, among others, by parents pushing baby strollers) as well as “We are ready for the great battle.” Some also singled out Wendy Sherman, the lead American negotiator in the talks, shouting “Death to Sherman.” Demonstrations on the anniversary of the revolution are usually lead by Iran’s hard-line factions, which have been opposed to the recent thawing of relations as well as the negotiations.
