Iranian activist Reza Khandan was freed from custody in Iran Sunday, according to a Facebook post from his lawyer cited by Radio Free Europe. Khandan was imprisoned in early September, after he posted on Facebook about human rights violations in the authoritarian regime including the persecution of anti-hijab activists. He was charged with acting against Iran’s national security and supporting “anti-hijab” action. His lawyer, Mohammad Moghimi, did not provide information about the reason for Khandan’s release—but he did note that both Khandan’s wife Nasrin Sotoudeh, who is also imprisoned, and activist Farhad Meysami have now ended their hunger strikes, which were prompted in part by Khandan’s arrest. Sotoudeh, a human rights lawyer who was detained for “activities against national security in collaboration with domestic and foreign antirevolutionary elements,” remains in prison.
