Italian Parliament Elects New President

Sergio Mattarella.

After three rounds of inconclusive voting, Italy’s parliament elected Sergio Mattarella, a constitutional court judge and veteran politician, as president. Mattarella was the only candidate put forward by Prime Minister Matteo Renzi’s Democratic Party. The 73-year-old won with 665 votes, far past the 505 required to win.
