James Arness, the actor best known for playing Marshal Matt Dillon on Gunsmoke, died Friday at age 88. Reportedly, he died of natural causes. Arness was born in Minnesota and got his start as a radio announcer in his home state in 1945. His first big film role was in 1947’s The Farmer’s Daughter opposite Loretta Young. The 6’7’’ actor appeared on Gunsmoke for 20 years and was nominated for three Emmys. He also made more than 30 movies throughout his career. Arness is survived by his wife, two sons, and six grandchildren.
