Actor Johnny Depp filed a $50-million defamation suit against his ex-wife, actress Amber Heard, alleging that she fabricated her domestic-abuse claims. According to The Blast, Depp took issue with a Washington Post op-ed Heard wrote late last year, in which she claimed to be a victim of abuse. The lawsuit claims the article was based on the “central premise that Ms. Heard was a domestic abuse victim and that Mr. Depp perpetrated domestic violence against her,” a claim which Depp said was “an elaborate hoax” to “advance her career.” The alleged incident on May 21, 2016 left Heard with visible injuries, which she said were caused by Deep. The suit, however, claims Heard was actually the “perpetrator” of the domestic violence, and her claims are refuted by two police officers, surveillance cameras, and third-party witnesses. Depp also claimed he was dropped from a Pirates of the Caribbean film after the op-ed was published, causing him financial damage. Heard and Depp finalized their divorce in Jan. 2017, just 15 months after they got married in May 2016.
