Ahead of Ramadan, a federal judge in Tennessee has ordered the inspection of a new local mosque. The re-opening of the Islamic Center of Murfreesboro, near Nashville, has been at the center of a contentious two-year battle driven as much by anti-Muslim sentiments as by legal issues. U.S. District Judge Todd J. Campbell attempted to put a stop to the fight Thursday by saying worshippers should be able to occupy the new mosque in time for the start of their holy month “If the building complies with applicable codes and regulations.” The Islamic Center has been open in Murfeesboro for over ten years, but plans to expand in 2010 elicited angry acts of protests, including an arson attack, a bomb threat before last year’s 9/11 anniversary and vandalism such as “Not Welcome” spray painted on a sign announcing new construction.
