First-time candidate Julia Salazar won her state Senate primary contest Thursday against longtime state Sen. Martin Dilan in Brooklyn. The local race between two Democrats made national headlines in the aftermath of fellow Democratic Socialists of America-backed candidate Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez’s win over Queens and congressional powerhouse Joe Crowley in a separate June primary for national races. And then a series of questions were raised about Salazar’s account of her own life, including her claim that she was an immigrant from Colombia. Old court papers emerged involving a legal fight with former Mets star Keith Hernandez’s then-wife, who accused Salazar of stealing from their home and trying to impersonate her, and then a conservative outlet moved to air allegations she’d made on Facebook and almost immediately withdrawn years earlier about David Keyes, a spokesman for Israel Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, whom 13 other women have also said assaulted or harassed them.
