Bertie McConnell was "absolutely shocked" on her 90th birthday when her lifelong dream was realized—she was invited to join a sorority. McConnell had wanted to join Zeta Tau Alpha in 1941 at Washburn University in Topeka, Kan. But after Pearl Harbor, McConnell left school to support the war effort by working at an ammunition plant. Her daughter teaches at Washburn and got the school's Zeta chapter to extend the invite.
