After killing several top Afghanistan officials in recent weeks, insurgents had apparently targeted President Hamid Karzai himself. Six people have been arrested after an alleged plot to assassinate the Afghan president, the interior ministry announced today. Several key Karzai allies have been assassinated recently, including Karzai’s brother Ahmad Wali Karzai in July and peace envoy Burhanuddin Rabbani last month. Officials claim Rabbani was killed by a Pakistani and that Pakistan has refused to cooperate in the investigation into his death.
