The war of words between Donald Trump and Kim Jong Un could be coming to an end as reports in South Korean media say the North Korean leader will suggest the president signs a peace treaty when the two men meet. North Korea is yet to respond to Trump’s shock acceptance of a summit with Kim Jong Un, but a report Monday in the Dong-A Ilbo newspaper, citing an unnamed South Korean government official, said North Korea would likely present a peace treaty to the president and ask to establish diplomatic relations between the two countries. Such a treaty would raise questions about the continuing U.S. military presence in South Korea and would likely have to contain a commitment from North Korea about reducing its number of nuclear weapons. Koh Yu-hwan, a North Korea expert at Dongguk University in Seoul, explained: “The U.S. wants a peace treaty at the end of the denuclearization process, while for the North, it’s the precondition for its denuclearization.”
