As Jimmy Kimmel noted in his monologue Monday night, the annual White House Easter Egg Roll has been around since 1878. But with Donald Trump in office, it was a little “different” this year.
“Trump heard ‘egg roll’ and promised to make the Chinese pay for it,” the host joked. “It was a fun day for the president. He got to eat chocolate. He even met a nice kid named Barron who he really liked.”
The celebration is officially hosted by First Lady Melania Trump, who the president dutifully thanked in his opening remarks. “She worked so hard on this event,” he said.

“Not a chance she did one thing to help set that up,” Kimmel said. “She didn’t dye eggs. The only thing she’s been working on is an escape tunnel.”
“Of course, no White House Easter celebration would be complete without storytime from our first lady,” Kimmel added, playing a clip of Melania reading aloud from a children’s book. He laughed as he mocked her accent and said to his sidekick, “Guillermo, you know what this means? You could be first lady of the United States.”
“Hey, I love that Vice President Pence just released the children’s book about a bunny,” Kimmel said, referring to Charlotte Pence’s book about her pet Marlon Bundo (of which John Oliver made a far more successful version last month). “Did they read that to the kids? No. They went with ‘dis and dat’ instead.”
Finally, Kimmel told his viewers that Trump “officially declared the month of April to be National Sexual Assault Awareness and Prevention Month,” adding, “at this point he’s just messing with us, right?”
