Police in London say they have uncovered the “last visible” human remains inside the 24-story apartment building where dozens of people were killed in an inferno last month. Police Commander Commander Stuart Cundy said Wednesday that 87 remains were found at Grenfell Tower, but the “catastrophic damage” at the site means they might not belong to 87 separate victims. Police have interviewed residents of 106 out of 129 apartments in the building, leaving 23 unaccounted for. “We assume that, sadly, no one from any of those flats survived,” Cunday said. Investigators have begun digging through the rubble by hand in search of more bodies. Officially, the death toll stands at 80, though only 21 people have been formally identified. The British government on Wednesday appointed a task force to take over the local housing council in charge of the building, after several high-ranking members resigned over the disaster.
