While the public went into shock when the jury declared Casey Anthony "not guilty" of killing her 2-year-old daughter, Caylee, lawmakers set out to make an example of the verdict. In more than a dozen states, legislators have introduced measures that would make it a felony for a parent to fail to report the death or disappearance of a child within a certain time frame. Casey Anthony waited 31 days before reporting her daughter missing. “Justice did not prevail in Florida,” said Kentucky State Representative Richard Henderson, a Democrat who has backed the bills. “Maybe this will change a deranged person’s mind in the future. Or maybe it will just give the judicial system another weapon in its arsenal to seek justice.” Already, 700,000 people have signed a petition calling lawmakers to action, created hours after the verdict by an unemployed woman in Oklahoma on Change.org.
