Former baseball player Lenny Dykstra filed a lawsuit against his ex-Mets teammate Ron Darling on Tuesday over Darling’s accusation that Dykstra shouted racist remarks to a Red Sox pitcher during the 1986 World Series, the New York Post reports. According to the lawsuit, Dykstra said Darling “maliciously” portrayed him as a racist in his book—which was a “irremovable stain and permanent cloud which will forever diminish” him. Dykstra also told the newspaper that his former teammate “literally made up” the story. “People read this stuff and believe it. [Darling’s] got an impeccable reputation. He’s always been a Yale boy. But he’s going to learn about loss,” he said, adding that the book’s claims “seriously damaged opportunities” for him to make money. Upon the book’s release, Dykstra reportedly claimed the event described in the book “just didn’t happen” and said Darling was “full of shit” and a “loner.”
