The first Libyan school year since the end of Muammar Gaddafi's rule began Saturday, with more than 1 million students starting a new curriculum that would not be based on the former dictator's philosophies—like that Italy is facist, America is Zionist, and the West, in general, is "devilish." Over a dozen schools were destroyed and even more damaged in the eight-month civil war that tore through the country's biggest cities. Crews were hired to clear land mines from schoolyards before the students arrived. Before he was overthrown in August and then killed by rebels months later, Gaddafi was a dominating force in Libya's education system.
