“It’s OK to not know the motivations of a surrogate regardless of what you assume,” Charlie McDowell said.

Actress Lily Collins' husband Charlie McDowell addressed negative posts criticizing their use of a surrogate just days after the birth of their new daughter. Collins, the star of Emily in Paris, announced the birth of their child in a joint Instagram post with her director husband McDowell, showing a photo of their baby girl with an embroidered blanket reading “Tove.” “Welcome to the centre of our world Tove Jane McDowell,” Collins wrote. “Words will never express our endless gratitude for our incredible surrogate and everyone who helped us along the way.” Despite the happy news, many were quick to attack the couple for using a surrogate for their first child. “So sad for this baby,” wrote one user on X. “Imagine taking it from its mother.” McDowell responded to the “unkind” comments in an Instagram comment Friday. “In regards to the unkind messages about surrogacy and our path to having a baby – it’s OK to not be an expert on surrogacy,“ he wrote. “It’s OK to not know why someone might need a surrogate to have a child. It’s OK to not know the motivations of a surrogate regardless of what you assume. And it’s OK to spend less time spewing hateful words into the world, especially in regards to a beautiful baby girl who has brought a lot of love into people’s lives.”
