An L.A. Dodgers fan is managing to look on the bright side despite four operations and counting to repair a gruesome injury he suffered setting off fireworks to celebrate his team’s World Series victory. Kevin King, 25, lost a large part of his left hand—including his index and middle fingers—after a random person handed him a firework, which he then lit, as fans took to the streets following the Dodgers’ Game 5 win over the New York Yankees in late October. King has undergone several surgeries, including skin grafts and other reconstructive procedures, and will eventually need to be fitted with a prosthetic, according to a GoFundMe his sister started to help pay his medical bills. He has also suffered hearing loss because of the accident. Despite it all, King remained upbeat during a recent interview with TMZ. “If you’re only losing a couple of fingers, don’t worry about it,” he said. “Thankful it wasn’t my face, eye or ears.” In her GoFundMe post, Gloria Nuno described her brother as “kind hearted,” saying he loves to make people smile and enjoys his job working in oil fields. “Our family is so grateful to still have him in our lives today,” she wrote, adding that he had lit the firework without thinking. King told TMZ he isn’t looking for sympathy but that he hopes to serve as an example to others—and to encourage them not to light fireworks.
