Argentine soccer star Lionel Messi missed a 12-yard penalty shot against Iceland on Saturday in what quickly became fodder for an epic Twitter roast. Messi, who has yet to win a major international tournament, was left red-faced after the shot was saved by Icelandic goalkeeper Hannes Halldorsson. Halldorsson brought instant fame to his tiny island nation, the smallest country ever to qualify for the finals. Messi’s missed penalty kick spelled doom for Argentina, however, ending the team’s six-game winning streak in the World Cup openers with a 1-1 draw with Iceland. The mishap also raised doubts about 31-year-old Messi’s future soccer career, as he finished the game with more than 10 shots, 0 goals, and the missed penalty.
