Days after video surfaced of Turning Point USA communications director Candace Owens saying Hitler was “OK” until he tried to go global, Fox Business Network host Lou Dobbs gave the far-right pundit some friendly advice: If you mention Hitler, you lose.
BuzzFeed News first reported that during the “disastrous” launch of right-wing student group TPUSA’s British launch in December, Owens made seemingly sympathetic comments about part of Hitler’s ideology.
Reacting to a question about nationalism, Owens mentioned the Nazi leader, saying he was not a nationalist because he was “national socialist,” and if he “just wanted to make Germany great and have things run well, OK, fine.” However, she continued, the problem with the genocidal dictator was when he “wanted to globalize.”

Appearing Monday evening on Lou Dobbs Tonight, Owens complained that she’s a “major target” of the left because of how effective she’s been at “delivering conservative principles to the black community.” While Dobbs expressed sympathy for her, claiming “left-wing advocacy groups” are “going to try to kill you, figuratively speaking,” he told her not to give them ammunition.
“In this business, it's a simple thing, the news business,” he asserted. “Anybody who brings up Hitler loses. Every single time. So if you’re looking for a metaphor, take it from the old guy: Find another metaphor. Find another symbol.”
Owens responded: “I’ll take that advice. I’ve learned my lesson.”
Following the initial backlash over her Hitler remarks, Owens released a short video clip attempting to dismiss her critics. The pro-Trump commentator blamed “leftist journalists” for allegedly mischaracterizing what she said, and declared that Hitler was a “homicidal, psychotic maniac.”
