A new study has confirmed what we’ve long known: smart criminals are more likely to get away with murder than the less brainy ones. Neuroscientists from the University of New Mexico scanned the brains of 96 soon-to-be-released male prisoners while they completed tasks on a computer that required them to inhibit impulsive reactions while making fast decisions. Four years later, the prisoners who had lower brain activity were twice as likely to be rearrested than those with speedier synapses.
